Study Group #3

Non-linear time is non-linear mind

We look forward to coming together for our Study Group # 3 where we will continue our exploration of Tyson Yunkaporta’s Sand Talk.

What living sparks have you felt stinging you?

As Susan and Kynan shared in our guidelines:

We’re not here to “understand” Tyson Yunkaporta’s book, but to feel the living sparks that sting us back into life. Be alert to these sparks, no matter how small – they are far more powerful and necessary than any linear consumption of the book, and can ignite great personal and social change.

Without holding back or pushing yourself forward, listen and respond energetically to what is most alive in you, in full confidence that what you share will be heard and considered with respect and gratitude.

Remember you can always add your contributions to this discussion in the comments below.

When: Sunday 19th July 2020, 4 -5:30ish pm AEST via zoom (please see your email for ZOOM details).

What we will do: Each fortnight we will continue our exploration of Sand Talk together; us-two.

Schedule: We invite you to sit zazen before gathering online. This will help to provide a wide open space for our discussions.

3:20 – 3:50pm | Offline zazen in place
3:50 – 4:00pm | Online space opens (cup of tea welcome)
4:00 – 5:00pm | Main Gathering
5:00 – 5:10pm | Closing & Notices
5:10 – 5:30pm | Informal social time.

See you Sunday!

Hello Everyone,
Sand Talk yarning in wider context and with respect to all our ancient ancestors –
I would like to suggest that we consider the bigger picture surrounding Tyson’s book ‘Sand Talk’. …..Please don’t forget the San of southern Africa. San rock art is at least as old as any other rock art in the world, and is still maintained as an active part of cultural practice. Recent genetic studies have suggested that the San are related to the most ancient of Homo sapiens termed the ‘African Foragers’. So, the San could be considered the original “Indigenous” modern human population. Unlike we Europeans the San do not have any traces of Neanderthal DNA, and unlike East Asians, North American Indians, Polynesians, Papua New Guineans and the Australian Aboriginal population, have no traces of Denisovan DNA. In other words, they have stayed in Africa. The San were indigenous to eastern Africa but were moved firstly during the Bantu Expansion of farmer-settlers ‘invading’ from West Africa, through Central Africa and down through East Africa 4000 to 1000 years ago, into South Africa, and then forcibly moved again into the Kalahari Desert of Namibia and Botswana by the Dutch/European ‘invasion’ of farmer-settlers 200 or so years ago. So, for all of us with ancestry outside of Africa, our ancient cousins, the San, with definitely the oldest continual culture in the world, have suffered a ‘double whammy’ of farmer-settler invasion, but still carry on with their traditional way of hunter-gatherer existence….when allowed to.
In pointing this out I am in no way intending to diminish or dismiss Tyson Yunkaporta’s delightful, thorough and artistic description of traditional Aboriginal ways of thinking and cosmology in his book ‘Sand Talk’…..It’s a big and fascinating world out there.

Hi Everyone, I am loving the study group gatherings! The open-hearted sharing and illuminations are breathtaking each fortnight. As are the in-between resources here.

I listened to a wondrous audio story from Emergence magazine a year ago – about an Orca community from Scotland – and just revisited it again today. There is much within it that connects and resonates with our exploring of Zen and “Sand Talk” and I thought to share it here in case anyone would like to listen. It sparks through me and brings energy to life as I dive deeply into Charles Foster’s reading of his story…
With warmth and gratitude
Sally
